Release Date: May 20, 2008 Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures is an online action role-playing game from the creator of Anarchy Online. A Single-player and MMO game “Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures” is first and foremost a MMO, which means that you can expect to explore a vast and detailed gameworld filled with content, but it also gives you a unique entry into the world through a single-player experience at the start. In the MMO world you find thousands of other adventurers, and you can fight them, join them or avoid them. By joining forces with others you can face the dangers of the world together, and thus harvest treasures protected by mighty monsters only groups of players can ever hope to bring down. Besides bringing the most brutal combat experience ever seen in a MMO, Conan also promises to deliver what all fans of MMOs love and enjoy. Vast character customization opportunities, a deep character creation, lots of social opportunities, crafting, a deep and fun RPG system, exciting classes, lots of exploration, and tons of PvP and PvE are some of the ingredients in this powerful MMO. At the same time, “Age of Conan” advances the genre by adding a single-player experience to the mix. When starting out the first time you go through a deep story-driven campaign with exciting environments and challenging, interactive quests. Starting out as a galley slave you eventually strand on the burning beaches of the Barachan Isles, with nothing but a broken oar and tattered clothes. In the next hours you embark on a story tailored to you, and you alone. That means going through a cinematic and riveting experience that you have never seen in an MMO before! When your character is ready, you will face even greater challenges in the larger Hyborian world. * Enter a massive online world populated with thousands of other players Revolutionary MMO combat In “Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures” this brutal and barbaric violence is made according to the dark vision of Robert E. Howard. We assure you the combat in “Age of Conan” will be unlike anything you have ever seen in any MMO before. * A real-time, dynamic combat system that let sword-wielders, spellcasters and archers fight their own battles in real-time -- no more combat on autopilot! Explore a massive world Thrilling adventures, brutal challenges, sweet success and painful failure – the Hyborian life is fraught with both perils and pleasures. You are but one person stepping into this gigantic world, which stretches beyond the horizon and into dark places never seen by man. In Hyboria your very existence depends on your ability to survive the challenges of everyday life, and a truly successful player must learn to both cleave heads and shake hands with the same care. Faced with incredible dangers all around there are plenty of rewards to be found, if you are up to the challenge. Whichever path you choose your Hyborian adventures will be filled with exciting quests and brutal combat, alone or in the companionship with thousands of other players. Age of Conan will test your skills to limit while sweeping you along on the journey of your life. The in-game world of Hyboria is massive, and spans the three mighty nations of Cimmeria, Aquilonia and Stygia. You will experience some of the most memorable locations seen in the Conan lore, such as the cold Eiglophian Mountains of the north, the burning sand dunes of the south or the jungle on the Barachan isles. You will visit majestic cities like Tarantia, where King Conan rules, the pirate hive of Tortage, or the desert city of Khemi. From cities and dungeons to mountains, forests, swamps and deserts, Age of Conan will allow you to explore a brutal, massive and incredibly lush world. * Explore dozens of exciting regions, each handcrafted with an incredible attention to detail and gameplay Rush into battle mounted on furious mammoths, or speed across rolling plains on horseback. It’s time we took a deeper look at mounted combat in Age of Conan!
Including mounted combat in Age of Conan is actually a significant step forward for the whole genre. Usually, mounts in these types of games are only used for getting from one place to another as quickly as possible, and not at all for doing damage. Check some of the mount screenshots here! When we set out to design the mount system we knew we had to do two things: create a certain feeling of depth and excitement, in addition to making it balanced and fair. Freedom of choice When you finally reach the required level to own and operate a mount in Age of Conan, there is a wide range of choices for you to make before you head out and buy one – and it goes well beyond just choosing what color you want it to be! In addition to choosing what type of mount you want (horse, mammoth, rhino and so on), you also need to choose between different variations of that mount. Each different type of mount has its own advantages and disadvantages. While the mammoth moves slowly, turns slowly and may be difficult to control, it can take a huge amount of beating. The horse, however, tends to be quick and easy to maneuver, but it will never stand up to the same amount of damage that the mammoth can take. There are also variations of each different mounts. Some horses are quicker than others, while others rely more on heavy armor. What you choose to go for not only depends on how much money you have, it also depends on how you want to actually play the game! Becoming one with your mount Heroic tales of Hyborian adventurers, who went through hell and came out on the other side with their trusted steed loyally by their side, are many and plentiful in the world of Conan. Becoming one with your mount is a necessary key to success. When riding into battle on a mount in Age of Conan you will gain various bonuses depending on the mount you’re using. If you’re using a mammoth, for instance, you will get a solid health bonus that will benefit you in battle. But remember, should you get killed while mounted your mount will die with you – and vice versa! The control system has been designed in such a way that your mount really feels like an extension of your own character, from the way it moves to the way some of them fights. “Some mounts have a certain acceleration rate, such as the mammoth,” explains Svein Erik Jenset, one of the designers on Age of Conan. “Riding forward on the mammoth you will actually see that its speed increases slowly, and when you tell it to stop it will not stop right away – it will start to slow down before it eventually stops.” Another case when you and your mount becomes one is while fighting. If you’re riding a horse you will actually have to swing your weapon yourself, trying to make impact. If you’re riding a mammoth on the other hand, it’s the mammoth that will do the fighting as it thrusts its giant tusks at the enemy! Machine of death Fighting while mounted is an art that can be challenging to master in Age of Conan. For instance, in order to maximize your damage output you need to actually ride quickly past your enemy and then hit – the faster you go the more damage you will do! Of course, this also requires you to know exactly when to let your sword go or you’ll miss completely. If you miss you will have to turn, and if you’re going fast you have to turn in a wide arc. And if you’re riding a mammoth even turning on the spot may take some time! There is a variety of weapons (such as lances) you can use while mounted, and you can even cast spells and shoot with ranged weapons such as various bow types, but there are also certain limitations in terms of which combos and what spells you can use. “You will have to evaluate each situation and see if it’s best ride into the battle or do it on foot,” says Gaute Godager, game director for Age of Conan. “Some mounts are really good camp breakers, while others can be used to actually crush entire buildings!” One of the most enjoyable aspects of role-playing games is the chance you get to define your character in a variety of ways. While everyone starts out more or less the same, hours of combat and adventure will shape who you are and determine what you can do. In the end you will have a character that simply feels like it is yours. Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures is very much a traditional role-playing game in the sense of you developing your character by gaining experience points and rising in levels. As you progress you’ll advance your character in a number of ways, such as: * Attributes: Your basic attributes, such as strength and intelligence, increases automatically as you gain new levels to further advance your character.
Simply put, you gain experience while playing – either by killing enemies or by completing quests – and by gaining experience you will also gain levels. There are eighty levels in Age of Conan, and progressing through them is they key to making your character more potent and to unlock a vast array of different feats and abilities. Attributes Native to all characters in Age of Conan is the attributes. Everyone has them and they will affect your character in multiple ways, such as determining how much health and how much mana you have. The basic attributes – strength, dexterity, constitution, wisdom and intelligence – are automatically raised for you as you level up. Here are some of the attributes available in Age of Conan. * Strength: Gives you a damage bonus for melee attacks, and also increases the attack rating for certain specific weapon types. Of course, you might also encounter items in the world of Hyboria that can strengthen your attributes. Surely any adventurer would brave the deepest depths of the Black Ring Citadel in search for the sword that grants its bearer a stronger arm? Or how about that magical ring guarded by the demons within the Sanctum of the Burning Souls that will expand your wisdom and grant you intelligence beyond your mortal boundaries? Skills All characters have a set of basic skills applied to their characters. These include, but are not limited to perception, bandaging, renew mana, casting concentration, hiding, climbing and taunt. Whenever you gain a new level you get a small amount of points that you can distribute freely between these different skills. They do not increase through use. Below are some of the skills available in Age of Conan. * Perception: How well you observe the environment around you, for instance noticing hidden enemies or possibly even traps. Some skills are based on so-called clickable abilities, meaning they must be activated by clicking on an icon on your hotbar. This includes, for instance, the perception skill. This skill will always work in the background and notify you about certain things such as hidden enemies. But if you get a message saying you’re detecting something, you have to use the clickable ability to try and reveal the hidden enemies. Others are passive skills, such as the taunt skill or the casting concentration skill. You will notice that you do not improve weapon skills. Your class determines what weapons you can use, and you do not have to improve any skills to hit any harder. “While skills are less character-altering than feats, they are still an important part of character development,” says game designer Andre Griffin. “For example most spell-using classes will want to invest heavily in the Casting concentration skill to avoid interruptions as much as possible, while player-versus-player players will want to invest in the Perception skill so you are less likely to be ambushed.” Feats At the core of the character development system in Age of Conan are the feats. This allows you to use points gained when leveling up to give your character new capabilities and more existing ones more potent. It can be compared to the talents system found in other games, usually being a tree-shaped system to display the various talents. Every character has three feat trees and they can be viewed at any time by clicking the appropriate icon in your interface. There is one general tree specific to your archetype (Soldier, Mage, Priest or Rogue) and two trees specific to your class. As an example, the Dark Templar has access to the general Soldier feat tree in addition to his class specific feat trees called Depravity – focusing on combo-oriented feats – and Desecration which focuses on spell-oriented feats. The feats are designed to improve his combos and his spells, as well as to grant him new abilities. Feat trees all have different names for the different classes, such as the Juggernaut and Tempest trees of the Guardian class and the Brute and Carnage trees of the Conqueror class. (Above: Dark Templar Depravity feat tree, note that everything here is work-in-progress.) One example on a new ability the Dark Templar receives through the feat system is the Dread Shadow that lies at the far end of his Depravity feat tree. Using this will summon a shadow companion that will rise from below and fight for him. Here are some examples on a few other feats available in Age of Conan: * Ravenous Eater: this Dark Templar feat gives you a large damage increase whenever you use your life tap combos (thus making them more potent). “Our feat trees aren't being designed to define the character or character roles as much as they are there to help you customize your character somewhat and enhance elements you already have,” says game designer Evan Michaels. “We don’t want to punish you for making the choices that you want. We don’t want to make it so that you feel like you are less effective because you trained a certain series of feats.” There are also different feats in the game that will be trained automatically as you gain new levels, specifically the feats that determine what weapons and armor you can use. You also have crafting specific feats, but these are trained by performing crafting quests that will take you from novice to master in your chosen professions. Abilities Last, but certainly not least you will find the combos, the spells and the stances that you will acquire through leveling. As you gain new levels you will be able to find shopkeepers who sell spell scrolls, and some might even be found through adventuring. The stances and combos, however, will be automatically granted to you as you level up. * Combos: These are melee combat techniques that you receive as you level up. You perform combos during fights by executing a series of different swings with your weapon, resulting in a fascinating animation and a bigger damage output. It can also lead to other effects, such as stunning your opponent.
Combos and spells can increase in effectiveness, for instance by investing in certain feats. For instance, the Glowing Embers feat for the Demonologist will make the Flamestrike spell do more damage, while the Boiling Blood feat for the Barbarian will make all his Berserk combos do even more devastating damage than usual. “We are putting a tremendous amount of effort into making character development in Age of Conan something you can really sink your teeth into,” says game designers Griffin and Michaels. “We want to give you a lot of different ways to play the game and we want to make sure character development feels easy to understand.” We shall call upon every strong arm and sharp sword to fight. We shall bring them to their knees and see them crushed by the fury of our kingdom!
If you ever open a Conan book or comic, you quickly realize that war rages across the ravaged surface of Hyboria. Conflicts are not so much an exception as it is a fact of life, not necessarily between the nations themselves, but often between factions residing within their troubled borders. In Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures player guilds will sooner or later end up in such conflicts with each other. Once a guild reaches a reasonable size and stature on a server, the opportunity to own a battlekeep will soon arise. But with only a limited number of battlekeeps per server allowed, guilds will have to war against each other in order to secure the power and fortune for themselves. We built this city on bloody soil Through the thick morning fog of the Border Kingdom the early sounds of human activity can be heard. Hammering, sawing, shouting. Everyone is doing their part. Crafters scurry around the work site while planning with the Lords and the Ladies of the guild, and mercenaries protect the guild members as they bring back timber and iron to be used in the construction of the battlekeep. Should you happen to come upon an available site for a battlekeep, or should you manage to bring down another guild's battlekeep, your guild will have to start constructing its own. This involves gathering resources, erecting buildings and making sure everything is sufficiently protected. Each building within your battlekeep will grant a bonus that will affect some or all members of your guild. Buildings include the blacksmith, the temple, the alchemist workshop, the university and more. While the temple may benefit healing classes within your guild, the university might provide a bonus for all spell casting classes and your guild will need to prioritize what to build. «Constructing a battlekeep might take anything from a few hours to several days,» says Game Designer Jason Stone. «You will need to carefully choose what buildings you want as you can’t necessarily build everything, and you must also focus on building the walls required to keep your enemies out and your buildings safely protected. You can build several lines of defenses.» Sounding the bells of war Thundering hooves can be heard in the distance. The sound of war is approaching. A nameless enemy musters its forces. The guards of the battlekeep, slumbering uneasily with one eye open jump to their feet. Someone is knocking on the gate – it's like the drums of doom. Blood will soak the fields beyond their walls today, and only Crom knows who will come out of it alive. If you ever find yourself in the possession of a battlekeep you will sooner or later have to face the fact that someone will try and take it from you. The good thing is that you, as a defender, will be able to more or less determine when your battlekeep will be vulnerable for attack, something that ensures that you will always have the upper hand and that there will be no nasty surprises. «If your battlekeep were vulnerable for attack all the time, that would soon prove to be very frustrating to players,» says Stone. «Instead the guild determines when it's attackable. You choose your own vulnerability window, and the bigger it is, the more benefits your guild receives from owning the battlekeep. Still, no one is safe: Everyone needs to be vulnerable at some point.» The actual siege is initiated when a guild set up a war tent outside the other guild's battlekeep within its vulnerability window, effectively declaring war on it. The defenders will need to muster their forces just as much as the attackers will have to, and from there it's surely survival of the fittest! A call to arms If the gold is right, the men will come. In the harsh reality of Hyboria, that's a fact of life. In the smoky taverns of Hyboria, many a man have traded his sword to dark-clad characters on a mission from some aspiring guild recruiting to bolster their numbers so that they can invade their enemy. All it takes is that the price is right, if that's the case, men willingly put their necks on the line. In order to let everyone enjoy the adrenaline-pumping siege gameplay in Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, we devised something called the mercenary system. Not everyone wants to join a big guild – not everyone has the time to join a big guild – so Funcom knew that we had to give even the lone wolves of Hyboria the opportunity to satisfy their thirst for large-scale, epic battles. «With the mercenary system your guild will be able to recruit other players to fight for their cause, no matter if you're the defending or the attacking guild,» says Stone. «They simply put out a mercenary request promising a certain amount of gold for services rendered, and as a player you can search for these at any time, choose one, and jump more or less right into the fray.» That player will then have to fight for your guild in order to get the gold promised. This will allow any guild with the appropriate resources needed to add padding to their numbers should they feel that they need help in attacking or defend against the enemy guild that might also use mercenaries. In the midst of battle The smell of death is in the air. The attackers, mounted on ferocious killer rhinos, stampede over the burning remains of the once mighty gate and charges into the heart of the battlekeep. The trebuchets continues to pound on the walls, wreaking fiery havoc, as the defending guild leader retreats to the headquarters to spend the final minutes of his reign – and his life – with his ale. When it all starts, the battle can be a scene of complete chaos. Funcom is aiming to have over one hundred players charging the battlefields at the same time, and the guilds will have to coordinate their attack – and their defense – carefully. Will you place the archers on the walls? Will you put your war mammoths at the front? A thousand war stories will unfold in the minutes or hours ahead. The attackers will usually start by crafting a few siege engines – such as trebuchets – and then place them tactically. As a player you will need to direct the shots of your siege engines yourself, as you try to focus on weak spots in the wall – most likely the wooden main gate itself. «For the attackers, destroying buildings and killing the enemy will give you points needed to gain in order to win,» explains Stone. «Everything you do gives you point, even congesting certain areas of the playfield. If you manage to build up enough points within the vulnerability window, you might win and the battlekeep will be destroyed so that you can build your own on ashes of the old one.» If at first you don't succeed The once green fields of the Border Kingdom are colored in sickening, crimson red. Limbs lie scattered across the battlefield and the crying of the wounded is the only sound. The walls were broken, the defenders were slaughtered and the battlekeep was conquered. As the victors toast their hard-won success, work has already started on a new, perhaps bigger, battlekeep. A siege battle may take anything from a few moments to several hours to complete, depending on the strength of the two opposing guilds. The walls might have been too strong due to upgrades, and so the attackers failed to succeed. The attacking forces might simply have been too big, and so the defenders failed in their mission to hold off the attackers for long enough time. One's victory is another's defeat, and so the wheel of time continues to spin violently for the guilds braving the frontiers of the Border Kingdom. And if your guild fails to capture a battlekeep, there are always the smaller forts to be captured – or even the ever valuable resource nodes! ON UR SERVER, PILLAGIN' UR KEEPZ! Though we've been gaming together for well over 7 years, we've slacked on getting our AoC guild going. We are still huddling our players up to register on forums but you are welcome to add to our early roster. As of, like right now, our forums have gone up. We already have a Ventrilo server and we already have the experience. I personally have led and co-founded 3 very successful guilds in multiple MMORPGs. Most of our members have much experience in PvP and raiding guilds, spanning from early UO, Meridian, to EQ, to AC - all the way up to EQ2, SWG, WoW, VG, and Tabula Rasa - to name a few.. Our members are basically a big group of buds and we are willing to take on more if you're willing to put up with us. Classes Wanted - 'cept those that involve alternatives to violence and/or alcoholic rehabilitation - we've had enough thanks. All races, and prestiges also welcome. Our main goal in AoC will be to establish our guild as a city, a hangout spot, and most importantly a group with the right skills and the resources to take on all oppositions. We are elitists when it comes down to playing, but our playtime will be filled with laughter while we smash some faces. We are looking for experienced gamers who know what to expect in MMORPGs and in particular the mechanics of Age of Conan. We expect you to play your class well with all group members and guildmates in mind. Organization and communication is a must, no exceptions, ventrilo will be used and we expect you to be there - or else expect to be left out of raids, groups and/or PvP. With that, we wish all guilds good luck and hope to see you soon.
